What the program is
The rock band program is a group class for young musicians ages 7 to 18. A teacher puts a band together, picks the songs, and runs rehearsal every week for twelve weeks. Classes are sixty minutes. When the session ends, the band keeps going if it wants to.
What students learn in a band
Private lessons teach you your instrument. A band teaches you how to make music with other people, which is a different skill and a lot of fun. In rehearsal, students learn to:
- Count in and start together. Sounds simple. It's the first thing every band has to learn.
- Lock in with a drummer. Listening while playing, and adjusting to the people around you.
- Cover for each other. When someone drops a beat, the band keeps going. That's a skill a private lesson can't teach on its own.
- Learn a song as a group. Who plays what, where the sections change, how to end together.
- Rehearse. How to use an hour well, take direction, and come back next week with your part ready.

Who it's for
Young musicians ages 7 to 18 who play guitar, bass, drums, keys or sing. Not sure your child is ready? Tell us what they play and how long they've played when you sign up, and we'll give you an honest answer.
Band and private lessons
The two work well together. Private lessons build the parts. Band is where they get used, and it gives kids a reason to practice that has nothing to do with a parent reminding them. For a lot of kids, the band is the goal and private lessons are the way there. If your child isn't taking private lessons yet, you can start with those.
